Hayes Valley's renaissance began with a demolition: the quake-damaged Central Freeway came down after 1989, and Octavia Boulevard's shops and Patricia's Green took its place.
Patricia's Green is named for Patricia Walkup, the neighborhood activist who spent a decade fighting to replace the freeway with a park.
