The Marina is built on landfill from the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition — a world's fair thrown to celebrate the city's rebirth after 1906.

The Palace of Fine Arts is the fair's only surviving monument, rebuilt in permanent materials in the 1960s after decades of gentle crumbling.
