The 'nobs' were the railroad Big Four — Stanford, Huntington, Hopkins, Crocker — whose mansions crowned this hill until 1906 burned all but one.
The lone survivor, the Flood Mansion, still stands as the Pacific-Union Club — its brownstone walls were the only thing the fire couldn't take.
